PIGMENT AND OTHER STYLES. 643

*■50

Ultramarine and Madder Extract.

The pattern on p. 644 shows a combination of red, pink, orange, blue, green, and black colours. The red and pink are again extradt of madder, thedifference in depth of shade being produced by printing on mordants “ colours”of different strengths. The black is a steam-chrome black, whilst theremainder of the colours, green, orange, and blue, are pigments mixed withalbumen and steamed after printing.

The first pattern on p. 645 shows similar colours upon a pale green ground. The light and dark red, the deep green, the orange, the black, and the blue arefirst of all produced by the methods recently described, printed, steamed, andwashed off. The entire piece is then “ padded,” that is printed all over witha pale green colour and steamed again. This method of working impairs theeffedl of the blue, red, and pink exceedingly little.

Carbonaceous Grey, with Chrome Black, Chrome Green, ChromeYellow, and Extract of Madder.
