An excellent practical exemplification of the relative values of different kinds of Englishcoal was afforded by the returns from the Gas Companies established by Act of Parliamentin England and Wales, made in accordance with an order of the House of Commons,in 1856, setting forth the kind of coal used, the average number of cubic feet of gasproduced from each ton, and the illuminating power. In the subjoined extract fromthese returns, those Companies are omitted that did not give specific information on thepoints required. It may be desirable to mention, also, that in many instances the standardof illuminating power has since been considerably raised, but as regards the results ob-tained from the distillation of different kinds of coal, they are generally applicable at thepresent time.
