THE GOVERNOR.

are fixed in the inner side, and the bar for holding the regulating weights passes through asmall hole in the centre of the top.

Fig. 90 shows the application of the same contrivance to a beam governor, in which caseno further alteration is necessary beyond substituting a rod for that part of the suspendingchain that works in the centre of the casing. In each arrangement there are cocks fixed inthe tank for regulating and drawing off the water, also a stop-cock, c, in the top of thecasing, for supplying water and for regulating the vent recjuisite for the action of thegovernor, when the rod b works in a stutfing-box. In addition to the safety of this arrange-ment, the incidental advantage is gained of increasing the steadiness of the action of thegovernor, by preventing the sudden rise or fall of the bell.

Mr. Cathels suggested, as a more simple method of avoiding similar accidents, the fixingof a suitable guiding-frame for the bell to work in, by which the tilting of it would berendered impossible. An arrangement of that kind is adopted in Mr. Andersons governor, showm in Plate XIII.
