Pulmonaria is a name founded on the belief,amongst ancient herbalists, that the Pulmonariamaculata was intended by nature as a remedy forpulmonary complaints. Opinions regarding themedicinial virtues of herbs were frequently drawnfrom their external characters; thus, the idea ofthe plant above named, being salutary for com-plaints of the lungs, was supposed to be indicatedby the spots on its leaves, which resemble those onthe lungs of consumptive patients.

The Pulmonaria maritima is a remarkably prettyplant when well established, and displaying itspink buds and blue flowers amongst its glaucousgrey foliage. It is rarely seen in cultivation, al-though a British plant, inhabiting sandy sea-coastsin the north of England, and in Scotland , where itis a great ornament.

It is best grown on rock-work, where the surfacecan be kept dry, small stones placed round itsstems, and a good depth of very sandy soil provid-ed for its long fleshy roots to run into. Here itshould remain undisturbed, which is essential to itssuccessful culture. Increased from seeds.
