The Greek aitho, to scorch, and nemo, a threador filament, are the words from which, there is butlittle doubt, the present generic name was deduced.It seems to allude to a burnt appearance of thestamens.

At No. 334, we gave a figure of iEthionemamembranacea, a pretty low border perennial, whichis very desirable in a dry and shady situation, butit does not bear exposure on wet or stiff soil inwinter. The present very singular little subject isan annual, therefore it presents none of the diffi-culties of preservation. Mention of it was madein the St. Petersburg Catalogue of seeds, for1837 ; but we believe that it was not introducedto this country prior to the spring of 1841, whenseeds were received at the Birmingham Horticul-tural Society’s garden, from Berlin; from whichplants were raised by Mr. Cameron, and obliginglyhanded to one of our artists (Mr. Mills).

Although its flowers are very diminutive, its lowstature renders it a suitable plant for the front offlower compartments; and the dense growth ofits singular silicles, gives it a pleasing effect.
