PHOSFHORATFP CARBONATED HIDROGEN GAs.
Remark. ..If substances capable of retaining moisture beexposed to fluoric acid gas, holding silex in solution, the waterthey contain will absorb the acid and the siliceous earth will beprecipitated upon them. In this manner lizards, frogs, moistfruits, bits of sponge, &c. may be encrusted with a coat of silex.Objects thus covered with a close and very hard siliceous crustgreatly resemble petrifactions, and may be preserved for a longtime.
PHOSPHORATED CARBONATED HIDIIOGEN GAS.
In Van Mon’s Journal de Chimie et de Phisique, p. 213, ispublished an account of a new species of gas discovered by Pro-fessor Tromsdorf, which is composed of hidrogen, carbon, andphosphorus. It was obtained by this gentleman during thede-oxidation of phosphoric acid by charcoal, in the commonprocess of distilling phosphorus. Its weight is nearly equal tothat of atmospheric air. It is not absorbed by water, oxigenhas no effect upon it at common temperatures, but explodesw ith it by the electric spark. It has no action on metallic oxids, but decomposes the solutions of gold, silver and mercury. Theproducts after its detonation with oxigen are carbonic acid gas, phosphoric acid and W'ater. From these results Professor Troms-dorf proposes to call it phosphorated carbonated hidrogen gas.
No further account of this gas having as yet reached us, w r eare not enabled to enter more fully into the subject, but as thelearned Professor has promised to investigate its properties, andpublish the results, we may expect to be acquainted w'ith itshortly.
