PROOFS OF THE PROPERTIES OF ALUMINE.

SECT. II.

EXPERIMENTAL PROOFS

OF

THE PROPERTIES OF ALUMINE.

Experiment I.

Alumine possesses a powerful attraction for lime.

THIS may be proved by agitating together fresh prepared lime-water and alumine. On separating the water by filtration it willbe found to be totally deprived of the lime it held in solution.

Experiment II.

#

Alumine is solulle in liquid alcalies.

If one part of alumine be boiled for some time, with six ofpotash, soda, See. in a sufficient quantity of water, a perfectcombination will take place, which may be decomposed againeither wholly or in part by the addition of an acid.

Experiment III.

Alumine comlincs with silex in the humid way.

If we mingle together a concentrated solution of alumine inpotash, and a like solution of silex, and suffer the mixture tostand for a few hours, a precipitate takes place consisting of alu-mine and silex.
