TROOPS OP THE PROPERTIES OF LIME.
water are required for one of lime. This solution is knownby the name of lime-water. It has a pungent, alcaline taste;on adding it to an infusion of cabbage or violets, it changes theirblue colour into green.
Experiment VI.
Lime unites to sulphur loth in the dry and humid way.
This has been noticed already, vol. I. p. 130.
Remark. ...Sulphuret of lime has lately been proposed forbleaching, by Professor Higgins of Dublin. The alternate im-mersion of the cloth in the oxigenated muriatic acid, and in adiluted solution of sulphuret of lime, is said to produce thesame effect as the alternate application of the acid, and of a so-lution of potash or soda.
The combination of lime with phosphorus by heat, has beennoticed, vol. I. p. 164.
* Experiment VII
Lime fuses with silex and alumine at high temperatures.
Though lime is’perfectly infusible as well as silex, yet if theyare heated together they will become fused, provided the pro-portion of the former be considerably greater than that of thelatter. Mixed with a third of its weight of alumine the massmay likewise be fused with facility.
A mixture of these three substances fuses much easier andmore completely than lime with either of them singly; thus,one part of lime and one of alumine may bring into fusion two,and even two parts and a half of silex.
