PROPERTIES OF MURIATES.

PROPERTIES OF MURIATES.

These salts yield white vapours (muriatic, acid gas) by theaffusion of sulphuric acid, and yellowish-green vapours (oxige-nated muriatic acid gas,) by nitric acid j both attended with con-siderable effervescence. They are decomposed by solution ofsilver, and are volatile at high temperatures without decomposi-tion.

METHODS OF OBTAINING MURIATES.

Muriate of potash, soda, ammonia, barytes, strontia, lime, magnesia, &c. may be obtained by dissolving the carbonates ofthese substances in muriatic acid, to perfect saturation, evaporat-ing die solution, and suffering it to crystallize. Muriate of ironmay be produced by dissolving iron filings in muriatic acid to sa-turation, evaporating the solution and crystallizing it. Muriateof tin, zinc, arsenic, and nickel, rnay be obtained in a similarmanner. Muriate of lead is best prepared by pouring muriaticacid into a solution of nitrate of lead, the muriate of lead pre-cipitates instantly. Muriate of gold is obtained by dissolv-ing gold in nitro-muriatic acid. Muriate of silver is formed bypouring muriatic acid into a solution of nitrate of silver. Mu-riate of copper is produced, according to Chenevix, by mixing54.5 parts of black oxid of copper, and 50 parts of copper ob-tained by precipitating that metal from its solution, by a plate ofiron, and putting this mixture with muriatic acid into a wellStopped phial; the solution will then contain muriate of copper.Muriate of mercury has been noticed already. Muriate of bis-muth is obtained by dissolving this metal in nitro-muriatic acid.Muriate of antimony is formed in a similar manner.
