THE CHARACTER OF MR. COLLINS. 169

“Mr. Collins had a praying mother, and whenone owes so much to a praying mother as I do,he will not fail to make important mention ofthis fact. In 1849 he came to Ohio and beganthe work of laying out the Cleveland, Columbus ,Cincinnati and Indianapolis railroad. Here, amidst the hardships of pioneer life, there weremany temptations to desecrate the Sabbath, yetduring all this time the young man rememberedthe influence of the good mother, and manifesteda high moral sentiment throughout. His lifework on the Lake Shore and Michigan Southernrailroad was begun in 1851, and from that timetill the moment of his sudden death, his constantattention was given to this great thoroughfare, and his death itself was a sacrifice to it. Thebusv engineer always had time to look after thebetterment of his employees, and there is to-daymany a family living upon its own lot, throughhis beneficence.”
