GENERIC CHARACTER.

Massa gelatinosa, elongata vel globosa, Jilts ramosis articulatis,farcta.(Lyngb.)A gelatinous, elongated or roundish mass, filled with branched articulatedfilaments.

SPECIFIC CHARACTER.

Ch.etophora marina; massa globosa, subcoriacea, cava; Jills hitra substantiamdensissimis, dichotomo-ramosis; ramlsJastigiatis , apicc clavatis.(Lyngb.)

Ch. mass globose, hollow, somewhat coriaceous; filaments densely arrangedin the substance of the plant, branched dichotomously; branches fasti-giate and clavate at the apex.

Hab. In the sea attached to rocks or various Algas. Common on the shoresof all the Hebrides , Mr Turner, in Eng. Bot. Frequent in the Frithof Forth. Autumn.In England, it has been found by Messrs Turnerand Sowerby at Kynance Cove, Cornwall ; and by the Reverend G. R.Leathes in the Isle of Wight. Mr Stackhouse also found it, butWithering does not mention the station.

Plants gregarious, roundish, sometimes indistinctly lobed, often plicate be-neath, rather soft, yet coriaceous. Size extremely various ; from that ofa pea to a small walnut. The surface is smooth and slippery; the in-terior hollow, and the substance in which the filaments are imbeddedabout |til of an inch thick. Filaments hyaline, much branched, jointed,dichotomous, the apices of the branches all terminating at the surface indark club-shaped granules. Duration annual.

It is impossible, in the present state of our knowledge ofthe minuter al gse, to arrange them into satisfactory genera.Eyngbye appears to me to have been more successful than anyyol. r.
