Class XVII.] EMBOSSED BOOKS BY MR. FRERE—MR. MOON’S PUBLICATIONS.

421

In May 1838, tlie “ London and Blackheath Associationfor embossing the Scriptures in various languages, andfor teaching the Blind to read on the Phonetic System,"was established. Its object is to stereotype the IlolyScriptures in James Hartley Frere’s phonetic characters.About the year 1839, Mr. Frere devised a cheap plan forembossing or stereotyping. It consists simply of smallwires, drawn with angles laid down upon tin plates. Thewires are bent, and cut by means of ingenious spindles toform the characters, which are similar to those of Gurney’ssystem of short hand. The wires are attached to the plateby heating it sufficiently to melt the coating of tin, into

which the wire sinks and is fast when cold. The commonprinting press is used in embossing. Mr. Frere’s booksare read from left to right, and back, after the manner ofthe ancient Greek boustrophedon writing. Mr. Frere’sbooks are well embossed, and from his plates the bookscan be printed as they are wanted. The objections tophonetic alphabets are obvious. Mr. Frere, however, does not claim to supersede the common spelling, or thecommon printing, or common embossing, but to form aneasy introduction to them. The following is a completelist of Mr. Frere’s books.

More recently still another system has been devised byMr. W. Moon, Master of the Brighton Blind Asylum. The characters are arbitrary, though Mr. Moon definesthem as the “ Common Alphabet Simplified.” He claimsalso a new mode of stereotyping, by which the charactersare rendered sharp and prominent. The lines are readforwards and back like Frere’s plan, and it is even morebulky and expensive than his. The new mode of stereo-

typing is believed to be quite the same as Frere’s, bymeans of wires laid on tiu plates. We subjoin a list ofMr. Moon’s publications:—

The different sizes of the print are distinguished thus :—

1. Lines very wide apart, for beginners.

2. ,, wide.

3. ,, nearer.

4. ,, flatter as well as nearer.
