Though several unsuccessful attempts had been madeS before the seventeenth century to introduce the manufac-ture of paper into Belgium , it was only towards the endof that period that it was regularly established in several’ provinces, with exclusive privileges granted by the| Government. Its progress was not rapid during thej eighteenth century; but during the last thirty years ithas been so much developed that Belgium has nearlyceased to import writing-paper from France , and printing-paper from Holland , and has lately considerably increased1 its exports of first-rate paper.
The following is a statement of the paper exportedfrom Belgium in 1849, with the countries to which it wasj sent; the total amount being 36,040/.
