A great and comprehensive genius excludesnone of the sciences; they all contribute, byvarious means, to adorn and embellish life;and, for that reason, ought to be cultivated andimproved. Happy is the mind that is not con-tracted by the study of philosophy, nor enervatedby the charms of the Belles Lettres; that canbe strengthened by Locke ; instructed by Clarkeand Newton; impassioned by Cicero and De-mosthenes ; and elevated by the. powers ofHomer and Virgil.
