jam 7, 1779. I exposed to the cold allmstat a phial, of pump water, and one of thesame water saturated with quick lime. Thenext morning I found the thermometer at28, the pump water frozen solid, but thelime water not frozen at all.
Jan. 9. When the thermometer was atleast 23 water impregnated with fluor acidair, after being exposed to the cold all night, was imperfectly frozen. At the fame timewater impregnated with vitriolic acid air wasquite solid, and also a quantity of the famein which some chalk had been dissolved. Butlime water impregnated with vitriolic acidair was quite fluid. Lime water was frozen, and a little of the lime was precipitated.
Jan. 12. When the thermometer was at20, and had probably been lower in thenight, I found the lime water impregnatedwith vitriolic acid air, and also the waterimpregnated with fluor acid air, solidthroughout. The former was quite white, but was transparent again when the icemelted. As the ice of the fluor acid melted,it swam on the surface of the liquid part.
