The acolyte; or patent safety candle-cap. The use ofthis instrument with lighted candles, while increasingthe light and lessening the consumption, serves to pre-vent the waste and discomfort occasioned by theirswaling or guttering, and overflowing, in draughts ormotion. The acolyte is also available for carrying ashade.

The invention consists in the combination of a capof metal (as a heat-conducting substance) regulating thesupply to the wick, with aguide of glass (as a non-conductor of heat) maintaining its perpendicularity with-out communicating heat so as to melt the lower part ofthe candle; as exhibited in the cuts on the next page, inelevation and section. *
