[The manufacture of machinery has only very recentlybecome a part of Austrian industry, and already promiseswell. The superior quality of the raw material of thecountry affords to this branch most important advantages.Prime-movers, steam-engines, and locomotives are pro-duced of excellent quality. Various circumstances, par-ticularly the enormous freight, prevented the transmissionof extensive contributions to the London Exhibition fromthis department.
The rapidly-increasing demand for machines, in conse-quence of the general development of Austrian industry, and the progress of railway constructions and of steamnavigation, has of late years called into existence the busi-ness of the wholesale manufacture of machines. But thisnewly-created manufacture had to contend, at its outset, with great difficulties. The natural consequence has been, that engine builders have not yet reached that perfec-tion which is to be desired, although they are already ableto compete with foreign makers in some of the mainor principal articles of their trade, and can now furnishsteam-engines, machinery for direct use, planing-machines,grooving tools, spinning-mules, mills, cranes, spindles, piunps, &c. The larger steam-engines (which are cominginto extensive use) are imported from abroad in a smallernumber every year. For example, of the 136 steam-en-gines of 6,839-horse power, which was the number regis-tered in 1846, 98 of 4,559-horse power in all were manu-factured at home. At the close of the year 1846, 760steam-engines, representing 24,734-horse power, were inwork in the German, Slavonic , and Italian provinces, butthe number lias since considerably increased. Notwith-standing the improvement that has been made in thisbranch of industry, the importation of machines and partsof machines from year to year has gradually progressed.]

Patent percussion caps. The total manufacture of per-cussion-caps for sporting guns in Europe may be estimatedat 1,300 millions yearly. Some idea of the importance ofthis article may be formed from the quantity of copperrequisite for its production, viz., 396,000 lbs. weight. The great advantages of the percussion principle havebeen so generally acknowledged that within the shortspace of 20 years all kinds of guns with flint-locks havebeen abandoned, and the percussion system has likewisebeen extended to muskets for the army. The percussion-caps exhibited are stated to be remarkable for accuracyand equality of bore, for the malleability of tlie copper, and superior quality of the powder. The percussion-caps coated with varnish exhibited may remain in water
