Woollen shawls. Shawls composed of wool and silk.[Stuffs for which worsted yam is principally employedare made in greater quantity in Bohemia, Lower Austria ,Moravia , and Silesia. These amount annually to 700,000pieces, weighing 60,000 cwt. The quantity of wool ab-sorbed in their production is 70,000 cwt. In combinationwith these goods we must take the manufacture of shawlsand scarfs, hosiery and Turkish caps, for which, in ad-dition to wool, cotton, linen yam, and silk are required. The manufacture of shawls and scarfs constitutes anespecial branch of industry in Vienna , and embodies avalue of some 3£ million florins. The manufacture ofhosiery is largely carried on in Bohemia The manufactureof Fez caps also amounts to a large yearly sum.
From careful calculations it results that this greatbranch of national industry employs 170,000 persons, ex-clusive of those employed in the production of wool. Ofthese 170,000 individuals 50,000 labour in the manufac-tories, and comprise—
10,000 weavers,
