[The lace manufacture formerly provided a very im-portant source of employment for the inhabitants of NorthBohemia ; but, by the discovery of the bobbin-net frame, the lace manufacture by hand has very much declined, andthe number of the inhabitants of the mountain districts, who were once engaged in it, has now fallen from about80,000 to 12,000. The cheapness of the articles produced, and the establishment of lace-making schools, whereby animprovement on the methods of manufacture could belearned, have infused, of late years, new life into thisbranch of industrial occupation, but without supplyingany well-founded hope that they will suffice to restore itto its former flourishing condition. In Upper and LowerAustria , in Silesia, and in Camiola likewise, lace of ordi-nary kinds is still manufactured. Net, particularly inVienna and Bohemia (more especially in the district ofEger) , is largely produced, and veils at Milan.
The productions of tlie bobbin-net manufacture inicnna, Bohemia, Moravia , the Yorarlberg, come in partturectly into use, and in part are previously elaborated byace-work and embroidery. Blonde embroidery is carriedon m the Erzgebirg. Eine embroidery is executed chieflym the Yorarlberg and also in Yienna.]
