Ground or earth-borer, to promote the vegetation offruit and other trees. This machine precludes the necessityof digging round the tree. The holes are bored at a distanceof two feet from the stem, obliquely, towards the centre ofthe roots, one foot from each other, and one and a halffoot deep, when they must be filled up with manure.

[The object of this implement is to secure a ready ac-cess of water to the roots of trees in dry weather, withoutbreaking up the ground. It is capable of boring holes twofeet from the stem, directed obliquely towards the centre, and one foot and a half deep; which holes being filledwith manure, and pierced at the distance of a foot apart, will enable the cultivator to keep the earth alwaysmoist.—J. L.] _

Sugar-cane mill, of improved construction.

The improvements made in the construction of tliissugar-cane mill consist, 1st, in the manner in which therolls are keyed upon their axes, which prevents them fromloosening; 2dly, in the mode of fixing the holding-downbolts, used for tightening the upper roll, which are passeddown through the wooden foundation, instead of beingkeyed into the frame itself. By this means the break-ing of frames is greatly prevented, as, in case of anythingof extra thickness getting between the rolls, the wood-sleepers of the foundation spring slightly. This sugar-cane mill is represented by a side elevation and plan inthe accompanying cut.
