alter the pitch of the spring, only so much as is positivelynecessary; this, from various causes, is often no easymatter, and the present invention, if it can be turned togeneral account, will be at once appreciated by tuners.—H. E. D.] _

Model of a crane-bridge on the Dutch railway. Thebridge is constructed over the river Schie, near Schiedam and Deefshaven, where the railway crosses the river at anangle of 87°. The name is literally correct, as the irongirdersarc nothing more than eight cranes, four on each side, corre-sponding to the four lines of rails, and so fastened together, that by the application of proper machinery to one side, thewhole frame-work falls back in a Hue parallel with thepier, leaving a sufficient opening to allow a vessel fullyrigged to pass between. The same machinery is used tobring the series of cranes together again, when a few boltsor catches suffice to retain them firmly in a position thattrains may pass over.
[When railways cross rivers or canals navigable formasted craft, it either becomes necessary to make thebridges at such an elevation as will permit the vessels topass beneath, or to construct them so that they may beopened. To make high bridges would, in many instances,be impossible without an excessive outlay. Swing, lifting,or rolling bridges are therefore in such cases indispensa-ble.—S. C.]
Model of a rolling-bridge on the Dutch railway. Thisrolling-bridge is constructed over the old Rhine , a littlebeyond Leyden, where the railway crosses the river at anangle of 82°. The bridge is of timber, the piers consist ofpiles, and the abutments are brickwork, on pile founda-tions. The total length of the bridge is 170 feet; its width,28 feet 6 inches ; the span of the three middle arches 32 feet10 inches, and the two extreme arches are 20 feet. Oneof these latter, which is intended for the navigation, isclosed by two parallel platforms, which slide diagonallyin opposite directionsj when opening they are movedsimultaneously by one man with very simple machinery. The cost of this bridge was 41,200 florins (about3,433Z. 6s. 8 d.). The bridge was executed with the assist-ance of C. Outshoorn, resident engineer.
Shutting of sluice or dock-gates. This new contrivanceis effected on the principle of a common water cock. Itconsists of a large turn-table placed at the bottom of thesluice, turning on a pivot and resting on a rotary disc.A large cylinder is fixed on this turn-table, having an open-ing in it of the same dimensions as the opening in thelock. "When this tube is turned round a quarter of a circle, which can be done by the means of simple machinery, thesluice is closed, and by the reverse motion opened again. The closing or opening can equally be obtained by thepressure of the water itself.
