Apparatus for regulating the pressure and flow of gasused in the public streets. The lighting up of a townis effected by pipes placed underground, which transmitthe gas where required; but the consumption varyingconstantly, the dimension of the pipes cannot be regu-lated beforehand in such a manner as to avoid, notwith-standing the ordinary regulator of the gas-works, the
introduction of a quantity larger than necessary for thewants of each division. This superabundance producesin certain parts too great a pressure, which causes a con-siderable waste of gas. The object of the apparatus, or gasmoderator, is to regulate this supply. It is placed on thepipes underground, and, by a very simple mechanism, maintains a constant and invariable pressure, whatevermay be the rapidity of the flow of gas. This affords agreat advantage with respect to security and salubrity bydi mini shing the escape of gas. The greater regularity ofsupply effected by this new invention, insures a betterregulated light. The gas moderator is eminently usefulfor hilly localities, its construction being solid and durable.
Gas regulator for consumers, for preserving an equalflame. Retort in fire-clay for the use of gas-works, newinvention. Patented.

1386a Parreyron, — , Hue Neuve des Petit Champs ,Paris —Inventor. (Agent M. de FontaineMoreatj, 4 South Street , Finsbury .).Specimens of a new kind of button, called “buttonclasp,” which can be fixed to clothes without sewing.Invented by the exhibitor. Patented, February, 1851.This invention consists in a metal plate, or under button,on which is rivetted a small iron stem forming a loop forfixing the button shank, which is solidly fastened byflattening its extremity, which is then passed into themetal and rivetted.
The method of using this invention consists in simplymaking a hole in the cloth, which should be first linedwith canvas between the two folds, in which is insertedthe button shank, and on the other side is placed thebutton-clasp ; a mode of fastening not hitherto surpassed. If the coat is a mili tary one, it offers the advantage ofbeing able to take off the buttons in order to betterclean it without risk.
The inventor has also improved the buttons of braces;instead of making stitched button-holes, the centre of thebutton is punched, and through the hole is passed a smallpiece of iron wire, which is rivetted, and thus prepared toreceive the button clasp. It is principally adapted foruniforms. _
