[The more expensive and finer kind of watches are manu-factured at Geneva, as well as a great number of chrono-meters. Watch-cases are principally made in this town,and it is calculated that more than 600 chasers are em-ployed in this department, as well as a considerable num-ber of enamel-painters. The small watches which aremounted in bracelets, rings, &c., are made in this town,arine-chronometers are executed according to order,ihe watch-trade of the Canton of Neuchatel , is centredpuncipally in the small towns of Lode and Chauxde-tends, situated in the middle of the valleys of the Jura.

articles are minutely and carefully inspected by the prin-cipal manufacturers, before being exported. Althoughthe greater part of the watcli-manufaeturers of the Cantonsof Heuchatel, Berne, and Vaud , are more especially en-gaged in the manufacture of cheap and inferior watches,there are still some of the larger firms, who employ manyeminent workmen in the construction of pocket andmarine chronometers, as well as astronomical watches.These three cantons, as well as that of Geneva, containnumerous factories, exclusively employed in the construc-tion of machines and instruments employed in this trade,and in the manufacture of articles connected with it,such as dials, watch-hands, springs, keys, watch-jewels, &c.
There arc but few houses engaged in the manufactureof clocks, the trade of which is extremely limited.
Many of the cantons, especially Geneva, Zurich, Berne,and Bale, possess several factories of jewellery, more parti-cular for the home supply, there being only a small ex-portation for Italy and Germany . The second hand, showing the fifth of a second,being independent of tbe movement, Btops at will, withoutaltering the motion of the watch. In order to cause thehand to make a mark on the dial, it is suificient to pressthe small knob placed near the pendant, and the mark orpoint is made without slackening the hand: 300 suchobservations can be made in one minute. The ancientchronographs had two movements: the mechanism ofthis has one only, which is much simplified, and is fur-nished with Breguet spring, lever escapement, visiblepallets, and is in a gold hunting-case.
