Of the two historic compartments of the front, the sub-jects are, Julius Caesar having just landed on the British shore, in the year 52 b.c., with a torch in his hand toindicate the civilization of ancient Rome $ the other re-presents King John signing Magna Charta , at Runny-niedo, in the year 1215, at the requisition, and in thepresence of the barons of England. On the other side,Sir R. Peel proclaims Eree-trade, a broken sword lies athis feet as an emblem of the means the great statesmanhad first used as a defender of the protection system,which he afterwards disapproved and abandoned. Lastly,Religion, kneeling at the feet of our Saviour, receives thewritings of the Evangelists.
Each end of the casket is divided into three other com-partments, the centre being the largest. On the loft,Queen Victoria drops garlands on the earth, and the
opposite side represents Prince Albert . The candelabraare repeated in the four smaller compartments.
A triton, in full relievo, lasting on a lxippoeamp, occu-pies each of the four truncated corners.
The lock of the casket was constructed by Sig. PasqualcFranci, and the velvet used for the lining was manufac-tured by Sig. Giuseppe Masotti, both of Siena.

A fine plate, in a frame, executed in the taste pre-valent at the beginning of the seventeenth century. It iscomposed of large lozenges and rhomboidal-sliaped piecesof looking-glass, regidarly cut, and arranged in a borderof considerable depth, after a design by the exhibitor.This glass is placed on a table, carved and gilt in theLouis XIV. style, by Nosotti of London .
