[These vessels of simple form, used for holding oil, fruit, water, grain, &c., are intended for domestic ratherthan for ornamental purposes. Enormous vessels of this°lass have been made in all countries from tlie earliest

period.

The ancient amphora, the jars found near Antiiun abovefeet high, the jar or tub of Diogenes , which was adescription of earthen vessel or jar, distinguished fromthe amphora by its large mouth and comparatively flat-tened base (its shape was more of a gourd or pot, its sizear ge enough to have rendered it applicable to the pur-poses of a cistern or water-butt), are all analogous in form0 those now manufactured in various parts of the globe.

Large vessels are made in France , principally in Au-^ergne and in the Pyrenees; in Tuscany , in the neigh-ourhood of Leghorn , where they are called coppo, in1 l enna cziro, and orcio in the Florentine territory (theorcio in the Musee Ceramique measures 4 feet 7 inches, byd feet 3 inches).

®ome of these are of enormous diameter and of extra-ordinary capacity.

®pain, similar vessels are termed tinaja , and are ofmost gigantic size known; some of them requiringWenty men to lift them from the kiln,of ] ^ na J a ™ Lie Musee Ceramique at Sevres is upwardsj, Lei high, by 5 feet 2 inches in diameter; and Baronerc y, a surgeon of the Imperial army, states that he has

measured some 13 feet 11 inch high, by 6 feet G inchesin diameter. They had probably been introduced intoSpain by the Moors, as similar vessels are found amongthe Arabs of Mount Atlas.

They are called kmipchines by the Caucasian tribes ofArmenia , by whom they are used to contain wine.

Gigantic vessels were also made by tlie Boshmen of theCapo, and by the Indians of Java, who use them for water, and for holding gold-fishes.

Fragments of gigantic vessels are found on the bordersof the Ohio . In the class of gigantic pieces may also beplaced the vessel that was made to contain the famousturbot (Rhomhus) of Domitian , and for the baking of whichhe caused an oven to be constructed: this vessel, accordingto the estimate of M. Brongniart, cannot have been lessthan between C and 7 feet in diameter.]
