[The production of tills article of universal celebrityforms one of the most successful of Russian manufactures.Owing to some unexplained causes, the same process ofmanipulation which is carried on in Russia with the bestresult yields only inferior products when it has been else-where attempted. The process is very simple ; but itssuccess appears to depend upon some local cause, and isgenerally attributed to the water or to the bark used. The peculiar and agreeable odour of Russian leatheris due to its impregnation with an empyreumatic oil, obtained from the bark of the birch tree. The leatherhas the property of resisting decay and the attacks offungi, insects, &c., whence its value for bookbindingpurposes.—R. E.]
