[The method of printing in colours is expensive andslow. The design is executed on as many stones as thereare colours required to produce the picture. The artist isunable to see the effect of his work until he receives theproof from the printer—practice alone enabling him tojudge of the effect to be produced by the union of colours.

Great precision is also necessary hi the printer, both inplacing the-colours and in giving them then* proper tone—the least variation destroying the intended effect. Withproper skill on the part of both artist and printer, picturesmay bo produced rivalling oil paintings in richness andbrilliancy of colouring, as well as in mellowness and gra-dation of tone.—S.]
