engine. It -will be seen that the link u", like the pistonrod a', only transmits the differential or useful force of thepiston b.

The manner in which the same is to be put into opera-tion, reference being first had to Fig. 1. Before starting, fuel is put into the fire-places B B, and ignited, a slowcombustion being kept up until the heaters and lowerparts of the regenerators shall have been brought to atemperature of about 500°. By means of a hand-pump,or other similar means, atmospheric air is then to beforced into the receiver Gr, through the pipe Q, until thereis an internal pressure of some eight or ten pounds to thesquare inch. The valve J is then to be opened, as shownin the engraving, the pressure entering under the piston bwill cause the same to move upwards, and the air con-tained in A will be forced through the valve F into thereceiver. The slide valves N N being, by means of the twostems n », previously so placed that the passages 11 areopen, the air from the receiver w r ill pass through the wires

in L into the heater H, and further into C, the tempera-ture of the air augmenting, and its volume increasing as itpasses through the heated wires and heaters. The smallervolume forced from A will in consequence thereof sufficeto fill the larger space in C. Before the piston arrives atthe top stroke, the valve J will be closed, and at the ter-mination of the stroke the valve K will be opened; thepressure from below being thus removed, the piston willdescend, and the heated air in C will pass through kp, P,and m into the regenerator M, and in its passage throughthe numerous small spaces or cells formed between thewires part with the caloric, gradually falling in tem-perature until it passes off at O r , nearly deprived of all itscaloric. The commencement of the descent of the pistona will cause the valve F to close, and the valve E to open,by which a fresh charge of atmospheric air is taken intothe cylinder A. At the termination of the fall-downstroke, the valve K is closed and the valve J again opened, and thus a continued reciprocating motion kept up. It
