[The manufacture of India-rubber boots and shoes, inAmerica , is conducted in the very parts whence the ma-terial is derived. Persons are employed to go round tothe trees ( Siphonia elastica ) yielding this remarkablesubstance, caoutchouc, in the form of a coagulable milkysap, and to collect the exudations flowing on tapping thestem. The fresh milk thus obtained, is immediatelymanufactured into boots and shoes, by being applied toa last layer after layer, and exposed to smoke to dry be-tween each application. In a few minutes a pair is com-pleted. The finishing for sale is effected in the towns towhich it is exported,—R. E.]

The parautoptie permutating lock is characterised bythe following peculiaritiesThe lock adapts itself to thekey in such a manner that whatever may be tlie arrange-ment of the bits in the key, the mechanism of the lockadapts itself to it. It is consequently at the pleasure ofthe owner of the proper key to alter the arrangement ofthe parts of the key, and constantly to exercise a new dis-tribution of the parts within the lock. By this methodgreat security is given to the look, and it becomesalmost impossible to open it by any but the proper instru-ment.

[The corrugated fabrics from India-rubber are muchemployed in tho manufacture of shoes. Tho threads ofrubber are prepared for weaving into these fabrics bybeing wound while stretched with tlie thread with which
