[Tlio general duties of tho Local Committees are described in pages xxi, xxii of the Reportand tho mode in which they co-operated with tho Executive Committee in the apportionmentof tho British Space, is described at p. xxxii. In illustration of these duties, the followingsummaries are given as furnished by tho Secretaries of some of the Committees.
It may be explained that on account of tho vast number of applicants for Space from theMetropolis, amounting to nearly one-half of those from tho whole kingdom, special arrange-ments were made to eusuro the best possible performance of the important duties of selectionand rejection.
The Local Metropolitan Commissioners formed themselves into thirty Committees, corre-sponding to the thirty Classes into which the Exhibition was subsequently divided. Thedemands for Space were sorted on the same systom, and those of each Class referred to tlioirrespective Committees, who dealt with them in precisely tho same manner as the ProvincialLocal Committees, with the exception that an appeal laid from their decision in tho firstinstance to a Council formed of tho Chairmen of each Committee. The statement of theoperations of the Marylebono Committoo will illustrate tho earlier stages,—that of the Sec-tional Committee Class V, the later stages of tho operation of tho Metropolitan Committees.Tho names of the Chairmen, Secretaries, and Treasurers of tho Metropolitan District Com-mittees are shown in Appendix XL. ; tho names of those who were appointed Local Commis-sioners and acted on tho Sectional Committees, will be found in tho genoral List of LocalCommissioners, at tho end of Appendix I.
The Rev. S. K. Cattloy, and D. W. Wire, Esq., were Secretaries to tho Council of Chairmenof tho Metropolitan Sectional Committees, as well as of the original City Committee.]
