Type-Founding. Tho first stop towards tho mochanical production of the Catalogues wastho preparation of typo on a scale commensurate with tho magnitude of tho undertaking. Two sizes were selocted—one for tho Small Catalogue and the French and German transla-tions ; the other for tho Illustrated Catalogue. Of each of these types it was estimated thatnot loss than six tons would be required ; making a total of twelve tons, to bo manufacturedwithin the short space of six weeks.
* Type-founders and compositors are paid by the 1000 types. The former find the quantity by actualenumeration; the latter by admeasurement: assuming the letter n to represent the average thickness ofall type, the width of tho page is estimated to consist of so many of this character, and is multiplied by thelength of the page; and this result by tho number of pages in a sheet: thus—
102 X 83 = 8,466 X 16 = 135,456
