APPENDIX No. XL1I.

SWEDEN AND NORWAY.

2 Crosby Square, City ,January 19, 1852.

Dear Sirs,

The year having recently expired which gave its name to the great event of theExhibition of Industry of all Nations in Hyde Park, at which I had the honour to assist onbehalf of Sweden and Norway , and the duties devolving on me as Commissioner for the saidcountries, necessarily protracted long after the closing day at the Crystal Palace , having nowreached their termination, as far at least as regards the official intercourse with the ExecutiveCommittee, I deem it a fitting opportunity to tender you herewith my grateful acknowledg-ments for the continual kindness, assistance, and courtesy I have met with at your hands, during the whole of that memorable year, while at the same time I cannot deny myself thepleasure of expressing my admiration of the able management and the indefatigable energywhich you have so eminently manifested in carrying this vast undertaking through all itsstages to a successful issue. Proud of the honour of having co-operated with you in so greata work, I am also anxious to render justice to the unremitting attention and aid afforded meby all officers under your directions, and especially to add my testimony to the high enco-miums which have so deservedly been passed on Captain Owen, of the ltoyal Engineers, bymy respective colleagues from all countries. The urbanity and zeal I have experienced fromMr. Wylde and Mr. Harman, likewise call for my highest commendation.

Wishing you all, dear Sirs, for many years to como, the noble gratification of successessimilar to the one your talents mainly contributed to achieve in 1851,

I have the honour to remain, with every sentiment of good will and respect,

Your most obedient Servant,

(Signed) Charles Tottie.

To Messieurs the Executive Commissionersfor the Great Exhibition of 1851.

SWITZERLAND .

London , November 3, 1851.

Allow me to address to your Board as the immediate organ of intercourse between theRoyal and Foreign Commissioners, the following letter, which I beg you will place before theRoyal Commissioners.

I cannot leave London without performing the agreoablo duty, which has become moreand more urgent during every hour of my stay in this country, of expressing to the RoyalCommissioners, as well as to the Executive Committee, my best thanks, both in the name ofthe country which I had the honour of representing, and in my own. The intelligence andorder shown by the acting officers of the Great Exhibition , and their kind indulgence happilyblended, as it was, with the necessary earnestness and severity, will be ever remembered byall thoso who had the good fortune to come in contact with them during this memorableperiod.

Among the great merits of the Royal Commissioners, whose beneficial influence on thegeneral intercourse among civilized nations will bo thankfully acknowledged by mankind, theattention which they paid to the charming arrangements, and I may bo allowed the expres-sion, the almost domestic comfort and order in the Building, are certainly not the least; andalthough they have gained for it the undisputed admiration of their contemporaries, I hopethey will not refuse the sincere thanks of an individual, whoso duties enabled him hourly toexperience the benefits of their happy organization.

I have the honour to be,

Gentlemen,

Your very obedient Servant,

(Signed)
