On quitting Domo D’Ossola, a veryshort distance of level road brings us toCrevola, a village where we pass theKrumback or Doveria, near the point atwhich it joins its torrent to that of theToccia. The road turns suddenly to theleft; and we enter the defile, which nar-rows as we approach towards Gondo, a vil-lage formed of two or three wretched look-ing dwellings, in the midst of which, a loftystone building of dismal aspect, with se-veral stories of small grated windows, risesin gloomy character, well suited to thedreary aspect of the surrounding scenery.This building is an inn ; but from itsprison-like appearance, it is calculated toinspire all the feelings portrayed in themost terrific romance.
