The torrent, which before tore down treesand rocks in its impetuous course, narrowsto a babbling brook; till at length eventhat dwindles to a rill, all traces of whichare soon lost in the broad face of a barrenrock. It appeared like the emblem of thefading honours of the country we are justquitting. Once its broad extending le-gions embraced in their resistless coursethe greater part of the known world, themost powerful nations bending before theirsuperior skill and strength. With themlearning and the arts enjoyed a long andprosperous reign; till unpitying fate caughteven proud Rome in her relentless grasp,and changed her dominion and her wealthto servitude and insignificance. A vivify-ing climate awoke in the middle ages thedormant genius of more renowned times,and illustrated it with the richest produc-tions of Italian literature. But Italy nowseems rapidly falling into its former waste:foreign influence and foreign governmentsare ill suited to give prosperity to a coun-
