town, a distance of 16 miles, on which the passengers between Philadelphia and Baltimore are now transported. There is yet but one track completed.

The number of banks in 1836 was 8, viz. 3 at Wilmington, 1 at Newcastle,1 at Georgetown, 1 at Dover, 1 at Smyrna, and 1 at Milford.

Educat on This state has a school fund, amounting to $170,000, the interestuc 10 " of which, together with a small tax levied on each school district offour miles square, at the will of the majority of the taxable inhabitants, isappropriated to the support of common schools. No district is entitled to anyshare of the school fund, that will not raise, by taxation, a sum equal to itsshare of the income of the fund. But few of the districts have yet gone intooperation under the school law.

The number of periodical presses is 6, two of which are semi-weekly.

Reiigous de* The Methodists in this state have 15 preachers, and 12,304 mem-nomina- bers; the Presbyterians, 8 churches, 9 ministers, and 1300 commu-nicants ; the Baptists , 9 churches, 9 ministers, and 520 communi-cants ; the Episcopalians have 6 churches and 6 ministers.

The first European settlement in this state was formed by SwedesTy ' and Finns, in 1627 ; in 1655, the colony was taken from the Swedesby the Dutch, under governor Stuyvesant; and after the conquest of New York by the English , in 1664, it was placed under the jurisdiction of the gov-ernment of New York .

In 1682, the country was granted to William Penn , and it was placed underthe same executive and legislative government with Pennsylvania . It was then,as it is now, divided into three counties, Newcastle, Kent, and Sussex, gene-rally styled, till the American revolution, The Three Lower Counties uponthe Delaware .

In 1701, the representatives of Delaware withdrew from those of Pennsyl­ vania ; the first separate legislative assembly met at Newcastle, in 1704.

Outlines or The legislative power is vested in a general assembly, consistingthe consti- of a senate and house of representatives for two years. The represent-amended atives are elected, 7 from each county, the whole number being 21.Dec. i£3i. 'Pbe senators are elected for 4 years, 3 from each county, the wholenumber being 9.

The executive power is vested in a governor, who is elected by the peoplefor 4 years ; and he is not eligible a second time to said office.

The general assembly meets on the first Tuesday in January, biennially.The first meeting under the amended constitution was in 1833.

The constitution grants the right of suffrage to every free white male citizenof the age of twenty-two years or upwards, having resided in the state oneyear next before the election, and the last month thereof in the county w herelie offers to vote, and having wdthin two years next before the election, paid acounty tax, which shall have been assessed at 'ea«t six months before the elec-tion ; and every free white male citizen of the age of twenty-one years andunder the age of twenty-two years, having resided as aforesaid, shall be enti-tled to vote without payment of any tax.

The judicial power of this state is vested in a court of errors and appeals, asuperior court, a court of chancery, an orphans court, a court of oyer andterminer, a court of general sessions of the peace and jail delivery, a registerscourt, justices of the peace, and such other courts as the general assembly maydirect.

The governors annual salary is $1,333 33J. This state sends one repre-sentative to congress.
