The legislative power is vested in two branches, a senate and house Constitutionof representatives, which together are styled The General Assembly and govern-of the State of Alabama . The representatives are elected annually, nlent -and are apportioned among the different counties in proportion to the whitepopulation ; the whole number cannot exceed 100, nor fall short of GO. Thesenators are elected for three years, and one-third of them are chosen everyyear. Their number cannot be more than one-third, nor less than one-fourthof the number of representatives. The executive power is vested in a governor,who is elected by the people, for two years ; and is eligible four years out ofsix. The representatives and one-third of the senators are elected annually onthe first Monday in August and the day following; and the governor is electedbiennially at the same time. The general assembly meets annually (at Tus­ caloosa ) on the fourth Monday in October. The right of suffrage is possessedby every white male citizen of 21 years of age, who has resided within thestate one year next preceding an election, and the last three months within thecounty, city, or town, in which he offers his vote. The judicial power is vestedin one supreme court, in circuit courts, and such inferior courts as the generalassembly may, from time to time, direct and establish. The judges, after No-vember in 1833, are to be elected by a joint vote of both houses of the generalassembly, every six years.

The annual salary of the governor is $2,000. This state sends five representatives to congress.

MISSISSIPPI .

This state is not far from 300 miles in average length, and 160 in averagebreadth. Between 30° and 34° N. lat.; and 11° and 14° W. long, from Wash-ington. It contains 28,000,000 acres. Bounded on the N. by Tennessee ; E.by Alabama ; S. by the gulf of Mexico and Louisiana ; W. by Louisiana andthe Mississippi .
