BLANNERHASSET’S ISLAND, isl. inthe Ohio , opposite Bclpre; 13 m. below Ma-rietta. It is a beautiful and fertile island,containing about 300 acres. It is so namedfrom a Mr. Blannerhasset, an Irish gentlemanof large fortune, who having, with his family,left Ireland in 1801, purchased and removedto this island, where he reared a costly andsplendid edifice for his dwelling-house. A con-siderable part of the island was laid out ingardens after the most approved models ofEuroj>can taste, and the whole scenery com-bined, seemed like the fabled fields of Elysium.But the house was most unfortunately burntdown in Dec. 1810, and shortly afterwards,the garden was totally destroyed, and few orno vestiges now remain of its transient splen-dor and magnificence.
