MARTIXICO, one of the Windward Car-ibbee Islands, in the West Indies , 40 in. inlength, and 100 in circumference. There arcmany high mountains, covered with trees, aswell as several rivers and fertile valleys, but theyproduce neither wheat nor vines. It producessugar, cotton, ginger, indigo, chocolate, aloes,pimento, plantains, and other tropical fruits;and is extremely populous. Some of the an-cient inhabitants still remain. It has severalsafe and commodious harbors, wcli fortified.Fort St. Pierre, the principal place, is in Ion.61° 20' W.; hit. 143 IT N.
