And say, what Truth might well have said, 1By all, save one, perchance forgot,

Ah, wherefore art thou lowly laid? 1

By many a shore and many a sea

Divided, yet belovd in vain; *1

The past, the future fled to thee

To bit us meet no neer again! ^

Could this have been a word, a look

That softly said, «YVe part in peace, 1 * ^

Had taught my hosom how to brook ,

With fainter sighs, thy souls release. ^

And didst thou not, since Death for thee

Prepar'd a light and pangless dart, *

Once long for him thou neer shall see, ^

Who held, and holds thee in his heart?

Oh! who like him had watchd thee here ?

Or sadly markd thy gUz.ing eye,

In that dread hour ere death appear.
