The gentle breeze came to him from the expected quarter,from the friendship of the leading cardinals. After eighty-six days of imprisonment within his own doors he wasset at liberty ; but he was forbidden to publish any morebooks, and as a point of courtesy advised by his friendsvoluntarily to resign his chair. He did so; and theyhaving then obtained for him a pension from the pope,the famous philosopher, seventy years old, left Bologna in September, and during the first week of March, in theyear 1571, entered Rome . A victory over the Turks wason that day in course of celebration.
