As the higher specific gravity denotes thegreater proportion of saline matter, hencehe justly infers that in the Atlantic andEthiopic oceans, the sea is charged withmost salt near the tropics, and becomes lestimpregnated near the line from the quan-tity of rain that usually prevails there : wealso see that the southern ocean is moresalt than the northern, the reason of whichprobably is, that it is the original ocean &which all salt was at first contained, and ,h/communication with which, the northes 11seas were salted, as shewn in Essay II.
