west, and several other winds. These areits delights in winter; but much greaterdoes it afford in summer; for before mid-day, the xystus, and after, the gestatio andneighbouring parts of the garden, are madetemperate by its shadow, which is longer,or shorter, as the day proceeds. Thebuilding is also the coolest, when the sunshines most intensely\ on the roof; byopening the windows, the western breezesare enjoyed, and it is therefore neverclouded by thick or stagnant air.

At the top of the xystus, projecting fromthe crypto-porticus, is the dicetce of the gar-den, and these are my delight; for here intruth, have I placed my affection. In thisis an heliocaminus, (an apartment madewarm by the sun) one side of which looksto the xystus, the other to the sea, andboth to the sun. From the folding doors,is seen the cubic-ulum, from the windows,the crypto-porticus ; on the side next thesea, and opposite the wall, a very elegantzotheca (a closet or small room), recedes, towhich a cubiculum is either added, or se-parated, by means of glazed windows andcurtains. Here are contained two chairs
