Amphitheatre , a place for exhibitingshows, very spacious, of a round or ovalfigure, with many seats rising on everyside. The area in the middle was calledArena , because it was covered withsand, or sawdust, to prevent slipping,and to absorb blood. It was also calledCavea, because surrounded by the caves,or dens, in which the wild beasts werekept. The Arena w r as surrounded by awall of twelve or fifteen feet in height,the top of which formed a parapet ordefence to the front seat, which wastherefore called Podium.
