In the spring of 1750, the officers of artillery bungdirected to investigate some professional points under the or-ders of the Chevalier Ferrero bi Pgnsiglione, madeseveral experiments to find the charge that gives the longestrange, when the piece is fired at the highest elevation the car-riage will admit of. The guns were of the same calibre andproportions as in 1746, only the sliot being rather larger, thewindage was less. They were loaded with the ladle withdifferent charges of common grained cannon powder : threerounds were fired from each gun with the same charge; thelame artillery-men gave five strokes of the rammer to thewad over the powder, and three to that over the shot; theguns on their carriages, moving freely upon a horizontalplatform were always laiat the same elevation, and everyprecaution was taken to load them equally; and measureexactly the length of the ranges, upon a flat piece of groundnearly on the fame level with the battery.
