ordnance; so that if there be 60 guns and 20 mortarsin the place, there ought to be 320 artillery-men, besidesserjeants. To every piece of ordnance there should be askilful expert man to direct the loading and laying, and theadditional gunners should be allowed for in the demand oftroops made for the garrison. Beside the commanding offi-cer of artillery, there should be 5 or 6 others of inferior rank;and even more, if the place be capable of making a longdefence.

The number of carpenters, black-smiths, and armourerswill be regulated by the proportion of tools, in the prece-ding inventory ; part of them may be taken from the artil-lery, the rest from the infantry of the garrison, or the inha-bitants of the place.

With one stage of countermines, and a large gallery,where it is possible that the miners on both sides may meet,their number should be 200 ; and zoo, when there are twostages of countermines, with two officers, and two non-com-missioned officers : part to be taken from the miners belong-ing to the artillery, thtf remainder from the garrison ; takingcare that the latter are men of approved courage and fidelity.

Of the first Disposition to be made for theDefence of a Fortress N N.

127. H E magazines being furnished with the ordnance,ammunition and stores contained in the inventory ; everyarticle deposited in the place allotted for it in the distribution ;the projected works completed, and the countermines pre-pared ; the commanding officer of artillery on the apprehen-sion of a siege, makes under the orders of the governor hisdispositions for defence : distinguishing the operations neces-sary to be performed previous to the investiture, from thosethat may be deferred till the place is invested.

128. In the first place, the mufquet cartridges are madeup ; light-bails, pitched faggots, and fire-pots pre pa'ed;the fuses drove ; a certain number of shells filled ; and inshort, every thing in the laboratory put in such a state of for-wardness, that in cafe of an attack, nothing will remain to be
