The master piece by Lukas van Leyden of Christ presented to the People(Bartsch xii., 70) is an exceptionally bright and brilliant proof. Of the 45 etchingsby Rembrandt, all of them of great excellence, The Triumph of Mordecai (Bartschvii., 40), The Angel appearing to the Shepherds (Bartsch vii., 44), St. Jerome(Bartsch vii., 104), The Great Jewish Bride (Bartsch vii., 340), The View ofOmval (Bartsch vii., 209), The Cottage with White Palings (Bartsch vii., 232), andthe portraits of John Lutma (Bartsch vii. 276), The Burgomaster Six (Bartschvii., 285), and of Uytenbogaert the Goldweigher (Bartsch vii., 283), are very choiceexamples. The etchings by Sir Antony Van Dyck are pure aqua-fortis impressions, including the rare one in the first state of his own portrait. And the etchings byNicolaas Berghem, Paul Potter, Adriaan van de Velde, Herman Saftleven, Adriaanvan Ostade, Herman Swanevelt and the other Dutch artists are of high quality.
The later engravings are all brilliant proofs. The Boy with a Dog by HendrikGoltzius is very fine; and so are the examples of Cornelis Visscher, Peter deJode, Abraham Blooteling and others ; amongst those by Schelte a Bolswert,Christ mocked by the Soldiers must be mentioned, and the Dead Christ, after VanDyck, by Lukas Vorsterman.
Amongst the most important portraits will be found:—The Plenipotentiariesat the treaty of Munster, after Terburg; and Rene Descartes the Astronomer, afterF. Hals, by Jonas Suyderhoef. The Pistol Man, by Cornelis de Visscher. QueenElizabeth, by Crispin de Passe. James I. and the Prince of Wales, by Wilhelmde Passe. Matoaka, otherwise Pocahontas, daughter of the Emperor of Virginia,1616, by Simon de Passe. James, Duke of Monmouth, son of Charles II., byAbraham Blooteling. Charles II. by Heinrich Danckerts.
