All the changes then which happento matter, are affected in it, because it is asubstance compounded of parts, and againdivisible into parts, each of which is a solid,divisible, extended, figured substance, or haththe ejj'entialproperties of the whole of whichit is a part, as much as the whole hath.But surely this can never be said of activeperceptive substance that it is compounded ofparts, which are likewise active perceptivesubstances ; we should then have as manydifferent perceptions and consciousnesses asthere were different parts of the foul: norcould such parts subject an active perceptivesubstance to mortality, or corruption, thoughseparated; for these parts could not be otherthan active perceptive substances, as much asthe whole is whose parts they are, any morethan the parts of Matter could be unfoldor unextended. Parts of any substance mustbe of the same substance, by the terms, andof the fame nature with the whole, of whichthey are parts; differing only from the wholein more or less, but not in nature and fun-damental
