guesses about its power and life in a state ofseparation, from these, and conclude fromjust reasoning concerning the nature of sucha substance; it will be neceflary to be parti-cular in this point. And lest an ambiguoususe of words, not importing precisely thesame thing, should perplex this matter, it isto be observed, that by activity and percep-tivity , can only properly be meant, a powerof acting and a capacity of perceiving, (orlet both these be called sometimes powers, tosave words); and by being active and per-ceptive, is meant the exercise of these powers,or real action and perception : though per-haps this distinction hath not been exactlyobserved before, where it was conceived no-thing depended upon it. And first let usconsider, whether the foul hath the pow-ers themselves, in a state of separation ;a nd, if it hath, whether it then exercisesthem; and lastly, whether it necessarily ex-ercises them then, or cannot be not-aBiveand not-percipient ) so to speak, when ei-ther entirely separated from matter, or join-ed to a system of matter always rightlydisposed.
