Butfarther, it is necessary not only that imagesbe formed on this sensory, but that the im-pressions of them remain there for sometime after, when even the artifice of a ca-mera ofcura cannot take effect; as in dark-ness , silence, and the absence of the object.But these very considerations ssiew that noneof this artifice will be necessary in a state ofseparation, when the foul is unconfined, andcan therefore perceive at first hand what isdone without, by applying immediately tothe objects, or being itself directly accessible.Memory therefore by impressions must beunnecessary in such a state (as has been assert-ed in the last paragraph); as much as a copywould be unnecessary, when we might con-sult the original itself. And when we areforced to own that it is the foul itself whichperceives thus at second hand, and under allthese disadvantages; we must also own thatit will perceive at first hand with more ease;for this is still but perceiving .
