be no longer of use. There would havebeen an inconvenience if they had been pa-tent and legible during the time of sleep: thesoul, awake by necessity, and active in itsnature, must still have perceived them, andfatigued the body with constant action be-yond its ability to hold out, i, e. sleep, andrecruiting the body would have been thusstill impossible. But by a contrary methodthe activity of the foul is qualified and keptunder, for the fake of the body, that theikopposite natures might be brought to corre*spond , and bear some proportion to each other.We may perhaps fancy, that the foul mighthave been employed in constant contempla-tion while we sleep ; but then it must haveindesinently directed the animal spirits tothose impressions, as while we are awake,and thus exhausted the only matter in thebody subjected to its command, and designedto be the sole instrument and minister of theA-///in spontaneous motion. The body wouldthus have languished, sleep would still havebeen impossible, and spontaneous motionmust have become an intolerable fatigue.
